Taco Chips - Hold the Guacamole Dip
from:"I bought Dean's guacamole dip before I came across your article. No wonder it is terrible; it had a strong chemical taste and avocado was one of the last ingredients listed on the label. I threw it out. I didn't bother calling Dean's because what good would that do - I certainly didn't want the product replaced.
The label is green and white and denotes freshness and leads you to believe that you are getting avocadoes. I am angry - I was counting on guacamole dip and instead I had taco chips with nothing. From what I understand, some of these companies have less than two percent avocado and the rest is starch and chemicals.
Now I definitely spend more time looking on the grocery store shelves after being deceived. I thought Dean's was a reputable and decent company. Wrong. They are up there in false advertising and consumer fraud with companies like Kraft. I tried another product that was more expensive and actually contained avocado and tasted like it. In this case, it pays to spend more. It also makes me think more about all the processed foods I eat, such as cookies and cake. I can turn this negative experience into something positive by having a better diet but obviously there is no industry standard - we have to take care of ourselves when it comes to knowing what is in your food.
Food needs more regulating. Unless there is imminent danger, these food manufacturers can get away with selling a lousy product. Guacamole is popular here in Southern California - kind of ironic surrounded by fresh avocadoes. In the future I will make my own guacamole dip."
